Understanding Turkey’s Healthcare System

Turkey has gained a reputation as a prime healthcare destination, catering to thousands of international patients annually. With technological advancements and highly-trained medical personnel, Turkey’s healthcare system has seen significant growth in recent years. If you’re considering a move or stay in Turkey, it’s crucial to understand its healthcare intricacies.

Components of the Healthcare System

In Turkey, healthcare is divided between public and private sectors, delivered by the Ministry of Health, universities, and the commercial sector. Foreign residents have the option of public or private health insurance. It’s important to note that the European Health Insurance Card is not valid here, and having health insurance is mandatory for residence or work permits.

The Green Card Program

Introduced between 1986 and 1989, the Green Card program was initially presented as a temporary measure, aiming to provide free healthcare for the underprivileged and uninsured. By the end of 2007, it had already benefitted about 9 million citizens. In 2003, Turkey had several social security systems in place, such as the SSK, Pension Fund, Bağ-Kur, and Green Card. Each of these had its own network of facilities and pharmacies, and payment methods varied across them.

Private Health Insurance

Private health insurance in Turkey offers advantages like shorter wait times and superior care quality. By paying a monthly fee to an insurance company, beneficiaries can access these benefits. Moreover, many private hospitals in Turkey have English-speaking doctors.

Family Health Centers

Every town and village in Turkey features a family health facility. Visitors can avail services for free by presenting their residence permit or passport. While some doctors operate private clinics without insurance coverage, they ensure specialized care. These private clinics generally have their own payment structures.
